She liked that it was small enough to wander around, but far enough to not be bothered. It was her peninsula, her haven, her retreat. It was her healing sanctuary.
But as her illness became her prison, her atoll turned into her guardian.
Maybe that’s why she left! She needed a new shelter. So she closed her eyes, to never open them again! A departure that only brought desolation and sadness to her refuge, but freedom to her!
That’s how there came to be one less life on the island, but one more soul freed from pain! That night, as she took her last breath, the stars came out dancing, welcoming their new member!
